The teacher (whose name has not been released) has not been fired and the DA declined to press charges. The teacher was fined $175 by the police department for disorderly conduct and the Milwaukee Public School District is going through a disciplinary process with the teacher. The district apologized and blames the outrageous behavior on stress due to budget constraints. You read that right.
I can't understand why the DA declined to press charges against the teacher for child abuse. I can't understand why this teacher was not fired. The Milwaukee Public School policy on discipline states,
The Board believes that students have the responsibility to give due respect to teachers, administrators, and aides and, in turn, have the right to receive due respect from them. This atmosphere of mutual respect would exclude students from being subjected to cruel and unusual punishments. The document very clearly outlines acceptable actions for discipline. Nowhere do district policies allow for corporal punishment or humiliation. This teacher's action was abusive, cruel, and certainly unusual.
Please take a moment to tell the school, the district and the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association that we expect our children to be safe in school and that teachers and staff must respect our children's bodies, minds and spirits.

One word: ridiculous.
That is horrible! I would be so upset if someone cut my kids hair as a punishment. Poor kiddo. I think the teacher should be fired. (I don't know what happened with the first comment, sorry!)
Outrageous! Oh, this makes my heart break and my blood boil! Thanks for passing this along. Not sure whether my opinion will mean anything, but they will definitely be hearing from me!
I cannot believe that teacher has not been fired. I hope the parents continue the fight to get this situation rectified!
Absolutely disgusting that the teacher still has her job. I was just infuriated hearing that story. That poor little girl. :(
That is beyond ridiculous...and then they allow that teacher to keep her job?!?! Terrible.
This is such an example of how we think we can treat children as less than people. Would anyone EVER cut an adult's like that? No. Way.
But we sometimes think we can treat children like that simply because we are bigger and more powerful. That attitude spills over into the way many whole countries are run!
The teacher is a bully - that's all there is to it.
Missy@It's Almost Naptime, you make an excellent point. One of the things my husband said was that if he went to work and cut a co-worker's hair, he would be fired immediately.
I'm extra worked up about the teacher still having a job because this district has a very clear policy about discipline and mutual respect.
