Happy Girl Hair: Tight Curls. Deep thoughts.

Water

I recently received a question from a reader (Hi Wanda!) about water and curly hair. It is a common belief that water and curly hair don't mix all that well, but science doesn't really support that. My personal hair hero, JC at The Natural Haven does a great job of separating myth from scientific fact in this post. Go on and read it, and then come right back.

I can say that from personal experience, I've found water keeps my girls' hair in very good condition. A daily water spritz followed by hair milk is just fine. My girls also swim twice a week and I think their hair looks best and is moisturized best when it's been immersed in water a few times a week. We rinse well in fresh water before they get the pool and then rinse thoroughly again when they get out. There are many people with natural hair who conditioner wash or rinse daily. If you check out the first ingredient of most hair products, you will see water listed. Some brands might call it an aqueous infusion-of-whatever, but it's water.

So go ahead and experiment. You may find that wetting the hair once or twice a week is perfect for your child's (or your own) hair, or that once every two weeks is better. You can't know until you try.

While we are talking about water, I want to take a minute to tell you how grateful I am that we can even have this conversation. 1.1 billion people don't have access to clean, safe water. Until a couple of years ago, Little B and Little R were among that number.

Please join me in showing gratitude for the water we have by helping those without. Here's how to do it:

Give toCharity: water $20 brings clean water to 1 person in Africa for 20 years. $20. 20 years.

Bring hope to an entire village. We are lucky to know an amazing family that has launched an ambitious project in Dali, Ethiopia. Though A Glimmer of Hope, they are raising funds to build a school, a health post and to bring clean water to people in dire need. Many Ethiopians, mostly women and children, must walk long hours to fill jerry cans with dirty water. Water-gathering is dangerous, hard work. Dirty water has parasites and carries disease. Dirty water kills. Everyone should have clean water. Please help the people of Dali get it.

we have been warned time and time again not to wash Baby G's hair every day. Still we do 'wash' her hair daily with a thick conditioner and leave it in. She also gets a spray down in the morning with added hair mild or conditioner. Her hair is in the most amazing condition. When I take a look at the condition(of the hair) of those who have warned about the water and washing, I don't see healthy hair. We have been doing this for 5 months, and if it were going do damage her hair, it would have done so by now.

When I was a kid, my mother washed my hair every two weeks. If I got it wet, I would get in trouble because she would start all over again. That was then. Now we know so much more about hair. A spritz doesn't hurt a thing and a generous conditioner helps with detangling. When I had a twa, I washed my hair almost daily. I also conditioned daily. I think that makes a huge difference.

Wanted to say thank you for your comment on my "Crazy Hair Day" poem on Love Isn't Enough site. I forwarded your blog on to a couple of friends who do amazing job with their daughters hair too! And thanks for your post about the water charity fund too. I am considering a project with the students I work with to raise money for this organization! Take Care-Catherine (http://mamacandtheboys.blogspot.com)
